Come Harvest Time

Happy Thanksgiving from the Glen Campbell family!

Glen and I will be celebrating this Thanksgiving with our memory care community, enjoying music and festivities, watching the parade and eating traditional turkey and desserts. It’s comforting to be a part of a community that understands what you’re going through. The continuous support we receive from one another is one of the things I am most thankful for on this long journey.

The bible says we should give thanks “in” all circumstances. Notice it says “in” and not “for” all circumstances. (1 Thess 5:18)

No one is thankful for Alzheimer’s!

If there is one thing Alzheimer’s teaches us, it’s to be “in” the moment. Glen lives “in” the moment and enjoys it fully. All his needs are being met and he is surrounded by his loving family and friends. That’s a lot to be thankful for!

As I celebrate this Thanksgiving with my husband, I will enter his moment. I will look into his eyes, hold his hand, kiss him, share a meal and be truly be grateful for the life we’ve shared and the children and grandchildren God has given us.

We may not be able to share the past or plan the future together, but we can find peace in the present by embracing it with love and gratitude.

As themes of seedtime and harvest permeate this holiday, they remind us that we will reap exactly what we sow. Whether you believe the bible, karma, or just the evidence in nature, it should be pretty evident that although caregiving is hard work, it will ultimately have its reward. Therefore:

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

So remember, no matter how difficult your situation may be, rejoice and give thanks as you continue to plant seeds of kindness, mercy, and love. In doing so, you are setting an example of compassion and perseverance that will bear fruit in others for generations to come and will ultimately be returned to you.

This message is conveyed beautifully in the lyrics of a song my husband released in 1994.

God bless you Kim and family for your caring ways in this time of Glens life. As a life long fan, it hurts me to be losing one of the greatest talents we have known. On the other hand though, it is a comfort knowing you are there taking care of him and making sure his needs are met. Many, many people are not so fortunate. As we enter into this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New years season, My thoughts and prayers are with you daily that you maintain the comfort strength and courage you have in this time. Again, God bless you all always. —-Tom Lockwood

  8. Vicki Silkey says:

I walked the journey with my dear sweet Aunt. The past year was so difficult, but also filled with incredible joyous moments. We would “stroll” the beautiful grounds where she was living – she in her wheelchair and I was the driver. We would sing Sunday school songs – in those moments, she was filled with smiles and joy. Her sweet spirit was contagious. I miss her everyday, but rejoice that she is running around in heaven with clarity of mind and a perfect, healthy body.

God bless you Kim and your family during this season. I too, took this journey with my darling daddy and my memories of those years are what sustain me now. These are the hardest but most precious years of all. May God continue to give you strength and support.

  11. God works in mysterious ways. We live in Canada and have spent our winters in Florida. We won’t be going this year but decided to still have Thanksgiving here. After our meal I watched Glen’s movie. I realize we are blessed to have Glen, he has been a major influence in my life. I’m thankful for his music, his courage to make us aware of Alzheimer’s. God Bless!

Not many days I do not think of Glen, his talent, and his journey. I watch him playing and singing and simply wonder how I missed some of the shows. Talents now crowded by destructive cells that cannot be repaired. THank you Glen, I don’t know you….but I think I know you.

  14. Glen has been my favorite singer since I was 12. I am 60 now and thankful for all his music.

  15. We Love You all.

  16. I give thanks for Glen’s gift of some of the best music in history and that he continues to be with us. I hope and pray he gets well, maybe a revolutionary breakthrough medical treatment. I cannot begin to list all my favorite songs. Thanks for the fabulous memories. God bless you, Glen.

  17. Thank you for your openness and sharing such thoughts. It has helped me in caring for my older sister, Sherry who is only 59 and has early onset Dementia. We lift up you and your family in prayer! God’s grace is so very obvious when we view life’s circumstances through HIS lense….
Sue Shisler (Bob’s wife and Debbie’s mom)

  18. I just watched the movie, “I’ll Be Me” and I was deeply touched by the support and love of the family. You are soft, yet strong in the wake of his diagnosis and you teach me how to be patient with my aging parents. Thank you.
